Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2023 Ford Escape Hybrid can be had in five trim levels. The ST-Line, ST-Line Select, ST-Line Elite, and Premium are standard hybrids, while the PHEV trim level gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Available exterior highlights include things like underbody skid plates, LED fog lights, front accent lighting, keyless-entry keypads, and other upscale options. Color options include Atlas Blue Metallic, Star White Metallic, Rapid Red Metallic, Vapor Blue Metallic, Cinnabar Red Metallic, Iconic Silver Metallic, Carbonized Gray Metallic, and Agate Black Metallic.
Engine (Power)
The standard hybrid powertrain features a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder mated to an electric engine that is capable of producing 192 total horsepower and is coupled with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Escape PHEV is a plug-in powertrain that mates a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder to an electric motor and combines to generate 210 horsepower, also coupled with a CVT. Front-wheel drive is standard, though you can opt for all-wheel drive on the standard hybrids; the PHEV does not offer AWD.
Performance
The 2023 Ford Escape Hybrid offers outstanding performance for a hybrid SUV. The PHEV is rated to achieve an EPA-estimated 37 miles on all-electric power before switching over to the gas/electric hybrid. It takes 3.5 hours with a Level 2 charger to fully recharge its 14.4-kWh battery pack. Using a household 110-volt power outlet, it takes 10 to 11 hours for a full charge. Like most hybrids, the standard Escape hybrid uses its gas engine to charge the battery and does not need to be plugged into an outlet.
Interior
The Ford Escape's cabin offers a functional, pleasant layout that is well-appointed with upscale features. The controls are easy to reach, with the ability to control your phone and the audio system from the steering wheel. You'll have a commanding view from the driver's seat and a generous 42.4 inches of legroom to stretch out.
The Ford SYNC infotainment system is one of the best around, and the available premium B&O sound system with the top-end 13.2-inch infotainment screen is mind-blowing. Behind the back seats, you get 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 65.4 cubic feet with the seats stowed.
Safety Features
Ford offers a solid suite of safety and intelligent driver aid features standard or as add-ons. Standard safety features include forward collision mitigation, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic monitoring, lane-keep assistance, and automatic high beams. The PHEV gives you adaptive cruise control, GPS navigation, rear parking sensors, and evasive steering. Other safety features available at higher trim levels or as add-ons include automated parking, front parking sensors, rear automatic braking, and a surround-view camera.
