Woodbridge, VA is 20 miles south of Washington, DC and is bounded by the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers. Our city is surrounded by areas of great natural beauty. Being this close to nature. we have numerous outdoor attractions and recreational opportunities available. These are a few of the local attractions that we’re sure you’ll enjoy.

Leesylvania State Park

This park opened full-time in 1992 and has been drawing locals and visitors daily. The park is dog-friendly, which allows your whole family to enjoy the wonderful surroundings. There are numerous activities available for the energetic and the not-so energetic. Five hiking trails allow you to exercise and enjoy nature at the same time. A boating dock is provided for visitors to spend time on the water, and fishing is also available from the pier.

Less energetic pursuits include a natural sandy beach for soaking up the sun’s rays and four picnic shelters to escape the summer sun and enjoy good food. Restrooms are available at the park. Leesylvania can be found at 2001 Daniel K Ludwig Drive, and it’s also approachable off I-95. Park hours are 6 am to 8.30 pm Monday to Friday, and 5 am to 8.30 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge

The Refuge was opened in 1998 and is filled with an incredible variety of flora and fauna. The mix of wetlands, grasslands, and forest provides for a huge biodiverse population. Over 220 species of birds, 6 species of butterflies, and 6oo species of plants all call this area home. For a bird-watcher, this refuge will provide days of quiet enjoyment.

Dogs, bicycles, and running are not permitted in the Refuge due to the large bird populations. There are well-defined walking and hiking trails, and there’s also a small dock reaching out over a tranquil pond. The dock is a favorite place to sit and enjoy the sights and sounds around you. There are no picnic tables or concessions in the Refuge, but there are benches in the parking area where you can have lunch. The Refuge is located at 3950 Dawson Beach Rd.
