Sitting right by the confluence of the Occoquan and Potomac rivers and about 25 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., the city of Woodbridge, VA is a fantastic base for anglers and water lovers to explore the region. If you are thinking of going on a memorable trip with your friends and family in your new 2022 Ford Escape SE, here are three great fishing spots where you can cast your lines and catch some large specimens in the area.

1. Pohick Bay Regional Park

An excellent place to enjoy a day of fishing, Pohick Bay Regional Park is a beautiful riverside reserve located about seven miles east of the Woodbridge city center. Open year-round between 6:30 am and 8:00 pm, this public park features a boat launch and plenty of fishing piers that attract anglers from the region.

Driving from downtown Woodbridge to Pohick Bay Regional Park takes just 15 minutes via routes US-1 and VA-242, making it a great place to spend a day away from the city. This park covers an area of about 1,000 acres and features modern amenities including a campground, picnic areas, boat rental facilities, and hiking trails. Some of the fish species you can catch here include largemouth bass, crappie, striped bass, perch, and bluegill.

2. Fountainhead Regional Park

Encompassing an area of about 2,000 acres along the banks of a tributary of the Potomac River, Fountainhead Regional Park is another top-rated destination among anglers from Woodbridge and other nearby cities. Managed by the NOVA Parks agency of Northern Virginia, this park boasts dense forests, rolling hills, and a large reservoir with fishing piers.

Providing habitat to healthy populations of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, bluegill, and crappie, Fountainhead Regional Park is a magnet for local anglers and a fantastic place to spend a weekend in nature. Other amenities available for visitors include several miles of multi-use trails, boat launching ramps, paddleboard lessons, and guided canoe trips led by local instructors. Getting here from downtown Woodbridge takes about 20 minutes by car via routes VA-123 and VA-647.

3. Burke Lake Park

Constructed in the 1950s and encompassing nearly 900 acres, Burke Lake Park is another popular destination among local anglers. Featuring a fishing pier, picnic areas, a miniature golf course, and several nature trails, this place is located about nine miles northwest of downtown Woodbridge. Some of the fish species you can find in the waters of Burke Lake include walleye, muskie, yellow perch, white perch, and sunfish.
