1. Mason Neck State Park

Offering the most photogenic sunsets in the area, Mason Neck State Park is an expansive nature reserve where you can spend an entire weekend hiking on beautiful trails surrounded by lush forests. Established in 1985 and managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Mason Neck State Park covers an area of a little over 1,800 acres and is located about 10 miles east of downtown Woodbridge. Getting here from the city center takes about 15 minutes by car along routes VA-242 and VA-600. Some of the scenic spots you should check out while at the park include the scenic lookouts at Belmont Bay and Kanes Creek.

2. Caledon State Park

Established as a U.S. National Landmark in 1974, Caledon State Park is another scenic nature reserve located right along the banks of Aquia Creek and spanning an area of a little over 2,500 acres. Welcoming almost 50,000 visitors each year, this state park offers great views of the Potomac River and the surrounding hills. Home to one of the largest populations of bald eagles in northeastern United States, Caledon State Park is a top-rated destination for wildlife watching and photography.

Located just 50 miles south of downtown Woodbridge, Caledon State Park can be reached in about one hour and a half by car, driving along route VA-218. Once you make your way here, make sure to check out the different hiking trails and explore the scenic areas along the riverbank.

3. Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve

An expansive wilderness area covering almost 2,900 acres, Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve is a beautiful public recreation area that offers photogenic panoramas of the Potomac River and the Potomac Creek. Located about 28 miles southwest of Woodbridge, this place can be reached in a little under one hour by car. Popular activities in this nature reserve include wildlife watching, photography, hiking, and picnicking.
